London Cool Climate Control SalesA majority of people in the UK today understand the comfort which can be provided by air conditioning whilst either shopping or travelling in their cars and enjoy central heating in their home; as a result, they expect more in their place of work. As a customer, we are more unlikely to spend time within or return to establishments that do not make us feel comfortable. Now there is reasonable evidence which supporting the business case for controlling temperature in the workplace. Recent studies have revealed evidence that concentration is diminished, with the resultant effect on output, in a workplace which is too hot or too cold. As a result workers tend to become irritable and feel tired; a lack of concentration may also lead to greater risk of accident. Acceptable Workplace Temperatures A comfort zone of between 16C/61F to 24C/72F has been unofficially suggested as suitable temperature band for most types of work, and the Chartered Institute of Building Services have recommended the following for temperatures in different work areas:
Is There A Minimum Working Temperature? There is an enforceable minimum working temperature, which is between 13C/55F AND 16C/61F which has been set by Health & Safety Executive. If the workplace temperature falls below this, employees do have the right to refuse to work. An employer is normally allowed an hour, from the start of work, for this temperature to be achieved. Is There A Maximum Working Temperature? There is currently no maximum working temperature set by Health & Safety Regulations; however, it is stated that "During working hours, the temperature inside workplace buildings must be reasonable", and The Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) to the regulations has set out that "all reasonable steps should be taken to achieve a comfortable temperature". This could incorporate the provision of suitable fans, air-cooling, portable air conditioning, or Climate Control equipment. Have a look at our Cooling Calculator to check out your requirements.
